History

Kansas City’s Local Construction Management Firm Since 1921
In its fourth generation as a general contractor, Hoffman Cortes has deep roots in the Kansas City area. Founded in 1921, by Morris Hoffman, Hoffman Cortes was built on integrity with the clients’ needs at heart. Hoffman involved his daughter and son-in-law, Carlos and Florence Cortes, in the company who, in turn, entrusted the business to their son, Gary Cortes, who began as a laborer at the age of 14. After earning his degree in civil engineering from Rice University, Gary joined the firm full-time in 1962 and carried on the practice of producing quality results on every construction management project. In 1972, Gary became president and led the company for the next 26 years. In 1994, Gary’s daughter, Rita Cortes joined the firm as vice president and chief financial officer. In 1998,  Rita took over executive leadership and oversight of the company with Gary moving into a consultative role, which he continues today.  Continuing the family legacy of providing quality construction, Rita serves as president/CEO and owner of the firm.

As the company experienced substantial growth and expanded its operations, in 2006, Hoffman Cortes transitioned its single leadership model to that of an executive team in order to better maintain the vision of its founders.

The executive management team includes the founder’s great granddaughter Rita Cortes, who serves as president, Scott Moffitt, senior vice president and director of operations for construction management and general contracting, and Chuck Scammell, senior vice president and director of operations for masonry restoration and new masonry construction.

Today, Hoffman Cortes continues to provide the highest quality work and expertise through its talented superintendents, craftsmen and trade contractors. From its early projects like its work in 1934 on the former Katz Drug building on Westport Road to recent projects including The Botwin Building in Waldo; Faultless Starch/Bon Ami’s headquarters in the West Bottoms; the KCP&L Iatan 2 project in Weston, downtown’s newly renovated AMC Mainstreet Theater; and the newly renovated Kauffman Stadium, Hoffman Cortes builds iconic structures that have added to Kansas City’s beautiful skyline and beyond.
