Rita Cortes is president and owner of Hoffman Cortes, a full-service construction management, general contracting, masonry restoration and new masonry construction company established in 1921 that provides complete commercial construction services across multiple industries throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Cortes also leads the three-person Hoffman Cortes executive management team that includes Scott Moffitt, senior vice president and director of operations for construction management and general contracting, and Chuck Scammell, senior vice president and director of operations for the masonry restoration and new masonry construction.
As president, Cortes oversees all private real estate development and property management. She regularly consults during the preconstruction phase and works with a variety of clients in the development of retail properties, small office buildings, industrial and commercial projects. She joined the company in 1994 as vice president and chief financial officer prior to taking over the management of the company in 1998.The great granddaughter of company founder Morris Hoffman, Cortes previously was an attorney with Gordon, Estabrook, Yeonas & Pesner in McLean, Va., and served on the legislative staff for former U.S. Senator John C. Danforth.
Cortes, a graduate of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce’s Centurions Leadership Program, has received accolades for her outstanding business and civic involvement. Honors include KCB’s 2008 50 Influential Women, Ingram’s 2005 40 Under 40, Business Journal’s 2002 Women Who Mean Business award and the Native Sons 2003 Scout Award, which recognizes future leaders of Kansas City. The Women’s Intersport Network also named her 2002 Coach of the Year for her volunteer work with the Notre Dame de Sion girl’s varsity basketball team.
Rita is a participant in the Helzberg Entrepreneurial Mentoring Program and serves on the boards of the Kansas City Chapter of Associated General Contractors (AGC), the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City, Missouri (EDC) and the EDC Loan Corporation. Previously she served as board chair of the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy and the Kansas City Free Health Clinic.
